A former hand surgeon whose TV commercial portrays him as a loving family man has been accused of assaulting his fourth wife, eight years after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his third wife. Dr. Michael Glyn Brown, 53, grabbed the arm of his wife, Rachel, during an Aug. 13 argument and bent it behind her back, "twisting it as if he meant to break her arm," according to court records.
Brown appeared in court Tuesday on the aggravated assault charge, a third-degree felony. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine -- a higher penalty because of the previous conviction, a spokeswoman for the Harris County district attorney's office said Thursday. In a statement, Brown's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, said the latest charges are a "private matter between two people who love each other very much" and asked for the couple's privacy. "We hope that they will be able to work this out among themselves," DeGuerin said.
Brown's bail had been set at $40,000. He posted bond on the condition that he not visit or communicate with his wife and children at their home, office or school, according to court records. His concealed handgun license was suspended for 61 days and he is wearing an electronic monitoring device, the district attorney's spokeswoman said.
Brown founded the Brown Hand Center, which specializes in carpal tunnel surgery. In 2002, Brown's medical license was revoked by the Texas Medical Board but reinstated with strict probation conditions for 10 years. Four years later, the board permanently revoked the license after he tested positive for cocaine.
As of Wednesday, the clinic's commercial was still airing on television. In it, Brown is surrounded by his wife and five children and says he personally trains the doctors at his office.
As a toddler climbs onto his lap, Brown says, "The Brown Hand Center will care for you, just as I care for my own family."
The clinic also has locations in Phoenix, Bedford, Austin and Las Vegas.
In 2002, Brown was convicted of assaulting his then-pregnant former wife, Darlina, by beating her with a bedpost and firing a handgun several times at her. At his trial, Darlina Brown said he held a gun to her head and she "knew he was going to kill me," according to The Courier of Montgomery County.
Brown received 10 years' supervised probation in that case. A separate jury in their divorce case awarded the wife $5.4 million for her injuries, including pain and suffering.
She has remarried and moved to Colorado, but she and Brown still have custody disputes about their two children, the Houston Chronicle reported. There is no final custody order prohibiting visitation, but Brown is not allowed to contact the two girls, ages 9 and 10.
