Loretto Kyle Alegria arressted on suspicion of first-degree murderPima County Sheriff's detectives have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the death of a 7-year-old girl found in a wash in Ajo on Thursday evening.

Deputy Dawn Barkman says leads and evidence at the wash helped detectives find additional evidence in a home where they believe the girl was murdered before being dumped.

Authorities have arrested and booked Loretto Kyle Alegria into the county jail on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Barkman says two young girls riding their bicycles spotted the body and called for help from a nearby home. Detectives investigated the death as a homicide because of apparent blunt force trauma. The child's name was not released.

Former fitness guru sentenced to five years for killing wife

Former fitness guru Doug Grant was sentenced to five years behind bars for the death of his wife.

Last month, Grant was found guilty of manslaughter for the 2001 drowning death of his wife, Faylene, in their Gilbert home.

A week later, the jury added three aggravating circumstances to their verdict. They ruled the murder was committed in a cruel fashion, that Grant did it for monetary gain, and that the murder caused emotional harm to Faylene's family.

Grant's current wife and other family members pleaded with the court Friday morning to give him probation, but the judge disagreed.

Woman first to die from swine flu in Maricopa County

A Maricopa County woman in her late 40s died from swine flu complications.

It is the first death in Arizona and the fourth nationwide as a result of the H1N1 influenza.

The woman had a chronic lung condition before she got the flu. The swine flu has now turned deadly in Arizona, but Maricopa County health officials say it will not change the way they monitor the pandemic.

Dr. Bob England, with Maricopa County, say, "Doesn’t change a thing. We knew this was coming and unfortunately …”

It brings the nationwide total to four deaths from the swine flu. Two-hundred-forty people have contracted the virus in Arizona but the rest of those cases are said to be mild.

Doctors say we need to keep things in perspective.

Dr. Sam Benjamin explains, "How many people are dying every day from not wearing seatbelts, diabetes and heart disease?"

Not to mention the 36,000 Americans who die annually from the regular flu. Now doctors statewide are calling Arizona's first swine flu death unfortunate, but not unexpected and also say it is not a sign for the public to panic.

Dr. Benjamin adds, “It's a tragedy, but people shouldn't be walking around with masks on."

The county is not releasing details about the woman who died.

Avondale teen mom indicted in drowning death of baby

Forrest Day kills child by leaving him alone in bath
County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today that Forrest Day has been indicted in connection with the February 21, 2009 drowning death of her infant son Elijah.

According to Avondale Police, Day left her son in the bathtub unattended for at least 15 minutes. The police allege Day, 16, placed the child in the tub and then went to her parent’s room at the opposite end of the home and closed the door.

The suspect’s 9-year-old brother entered the family home and found Elijah floating in the tub. He removed the baby’s lifeless body from the water and then alerted his sister as to what had happened.

The suspect attempted CPR and then took the baby to a neighbor seeking help. The child was later pronounced dead.

The evidence was reviewed by the County Attorney’s Incident Review Board and the recommendation was made to move ahead with the charges. Mr. Thomas approved that recommendation.

On April 23, 2009 a Maricopa County Grand Jury indicted day on the following charges:

•Child Abuse, a class 2 felony and dangerous crime against children and a domestic violence offense

•Negligent homicide, a class 4 felony and domestic violence offense

Family Violence Bureau Chief Suzanne Cohen is prosecuting the case. Thomas stated, “The evidence indicates that this incident was both a tragedy and a crime.”
