The first plate was awarded to Army National Guard Sgt. Robert Hageman, who nearly died in Iraq in 2004 after a roadside bomb ripped his Humvee in half.
"On both my other cars, the plates on that," Hageman said. "And I was just wondering when I got back, say OK when I went through DMV the first time and asked them for the plate they said they didn't have it.
So I just started thinking, I'm going to look into it a little more. And this just seemed like two people were in charge here, so I just asked, and sure enough it came around," Hageman said.
The new purple heart motorcycle plate is available to all veterans who have been wounded in action and received the purple heart. A $25 fee will be donated to the Veterans Donation Fund.
"Oh this is great. This is a great day, it really is. Just another way that the state of Arizona is honoring the veterans," Hageman said.
