Man Dubbed "the Ralph Nader of Medicine" Brings Medical Horror Stories To Arizona
During 40-plus years as a surgical anesthesiologist, Dr. Frederick Ernst witnessed medical miracles and medical malpractice.
"I personally had an eight-year old girl who bled to death on me on the table because of a reckless surgeon,".
Situations like that turned Dr. Ernst into a medical consumer advocate.
"About one in eight, maybe one in nine physicians in this country practice below the accepted standard of care," he says.
Dr. Ernst is especially concerned about the growth in office based surgeries. He says about one in four operations now take place in offices rather than hospitals.
"In many cases when that office door gets closed what goes on behind the door is often that doctor's business," he explains. "And there is absolutely no quality control or peer review processes going on."
Dr. Ernst says only 25 states have office based surgery guidelines.
"Arizona does have some guidelines, but they are not strong," he says.
During the week of May 10, Dr. Ernst willl be sharing stories and information on how to protect yourself at several Valley locations, inlcuding Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe on Tuesday, May 12th at 7 p.m. The address is 6428 S. McClintock Driver
