For football fans, there's nothing like a Saturday night in Sun Devil Stadium. But next year, one ASU tradition will be on the bench - the cheerleading squad.
ASU Students Katelyn Jones and Heather Piper have been ASU cheerleaders for 3 years. But two days ago they found out there will be no cheerleading squad for their senior year. The announcement came days after 2-year old pictures surfaced on the internet.
"I mean you can go in a bathing suit and wear the same exact thing going to a pool party. That's not going to be looked at any differently. I mean everything's covered up. We're not nude." Heather said of the photos.
Heather and 5 other cheerleaders were going to a lingerie party and posed for the pictures before at a private "cheer-only" party. But ASU atheletic officials say they are simply combining the cheer and dance squads to enhance the fan experience. Something that's been in the works for a while.
"It's a pure coincidence and the pictures had nothing to do with the decision." says Steve Hank of the ASU Athletic Department.
Meantime, it's a painful decision for some, and publishing the pictures just added insult to injury.
"You go out on Halloween, you see girls half naked all the time. It's just because we are cheerleaders, that's the reason it's put into the limelight." Heather explained.
"I've lost sleep over this. I just cannot believe it. I am still in shock." Cheerleader Katelyn Jones said.
