VW Van in crash with semi

The Department of Public Safety has been called to southbound U.S. 93 at milepost 186, where a semi truck and passenger van have collided head on.

The driver of the VW van was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene, DPS said.

The semi truck reportedly rolled over.

According to DPS, the semi was carrying copper concentrate. A hazardous materials team is working to secure the scene at this time.

Two medical helicopters were en route to the scene.

The highway to Las Vegas is blocked at this time.

DPS recommends that drivers use an alternate route if traveling northbound by taking U.S. 89 at the 93 junction. For southbound traffic, the alternate is the U.S. 93 and S.R. 71 junction. Both are clear and open.
