Arizona man Busted in 'Rent for Sex' Ad

Ronald Larson, 54, was charged with solicitation of prostitution after placing the ad on Craigslist.

A Prescott Valley man was arrested for prostitution after allegedly posting a 'rent for sex' ad on the popular Craigslist web site.

Police say Ronald J. Larson, 54, wrote an ad stating that he was seeking "a fun attractive woman (18-45) that is willing to exchange rent for adult fun."

An undercover detective corresponded with Larson several times via e-mail and discovered that he wanted sex 1-3 times a week in exchange for free rent at his home.

Larson was charged with solicitation of prostitution.

Sheriff Wins 7th Straight Jury Verdict

Arpaio says he wins jury cases, and discourages the county from entering into out-of-court settlements.

Another jury has sided with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. For the seventh time in a row, a jury has ruled against someone who sued the sheriff for treatment in the jail.

In the latest case, jurors rejected a $6 million claim by a former inmate, Thomas Stewart, who accused detention officers of using excessive force against him, resulting in permanent injuries. Arpaio says it took the jury only one hour to return its verdict following a several-day trial.

According to Arpaio, when his office goes to court to fight such suits, it wins. He's concerned about the suits that are settled out of court, in agreements between the County Board of Supervisors and their insurance carrier, which often sees a six- or seven-figure settlement as preferable to a possible jury verdict that could be much higher.

The sheriff also wants to correct what he says is a misperception that lawsuits against his office are numerous and expensive. He says in the past five years, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. has paid out approx. $300 million for wrongful-action claims. By comparison, Arpaio's department has paid out only about $40 million in the entire 16 years he's been sheriff, an average of only about $2.5 million per year.

More silly conduct on the part of the Mayor of Guadalupe!

People in Guadalupe were supposed to meet last night to talk about policing their town.

That did not happen because the mayor pulled the plug on the meeting. The countdown continues to tick away. Last month Sheriff Joe Arpiao said he was ending the $1.2 million contract with the town. He had given the city 180 days to find someone new to patrol the streets.

Last nights meeting was supposed to be the mayor's chance to calm the fears of residents and assure them that this will not be a police-less town in a few months, but instead she ended the meeting almost as soon as it began.

Mayor Rebecca Jimenez called for a vote to cancel the meeting because council member Patrisha Jimenez has an ailing father. The prematurely adjourned meeting caused a bit of an uproar from some of the residents and council members as they made their way through the lobby.

The Guadalupe Public Safety Committee is actually the group who called for this special meeting. They are a group of concerned residents who wanted to share their ideas with the council and mayor. They were obviously not pleased.

Council Member Frank Montiel tells 3TV the meeting could have continued with one member absent and he is not happy with the progress the mayor has made so far.

3TV was also told that the mayor has drafted a few letters to send to cities like Tempe and Phoenix asking for help patrolling but those letters have reportedly not been sent out. The mayor's supporters say give her time.

3TV tried to talk to the mayor but she said she would be right back and just needed to run to her desk but went out the back door instead.

This all started because of the mayor's comments about the sheriff's immigration busts in Guadalupe. Even the sheriff has said if the town gets its own police force, he can still come in and set up shop anyway.

Officer arrested in massive $2 million meth bust

Let's hear it again for Sheriff Joe! Great job on another bust!

A seven month investigation by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office netted a massive meth bust including assault weapons, cash, and the arrest of a D.O.C. officer.

According to the Sheriff's office, detectives followed a car that was under surveillance and made a routine traffic stop near 83rd avenue and Indian School. In a search of the vehicle detectives found 4 pounds of pure meth inside a hidden compartment.

The two people inside the vehicle were taken into custody by the detectives. The driver of the vehicle, Domingo Ruiz, was determined to be an illegal alien by deputies.

The Sheriff's investigation started when an anonymous tip came in saying that illegal drug activity was happening in the area. A total of 5 houses in the west Valley were put under surveillance for the investigation.

Search warrants were executed on Tuesday at each of the houses. One house contained an additional 16 pounds of meth. Also seized from the houses were weapons including AK-47s, shotguns and pistols, scales, over $200,000 in cash and six vehicles. According to detectives two of the vehicles were customized so that they could hide drugs in hidden compartments.

The estimated street value of the methamphetamine seized during the traffic stop and the house searches is about $2 million. Detectives say law enforcement in other states also confiscated 35 pounds of meth, 12 pounds of cocaine and another $200,000 in cash allegedly connected to the Ruiz family. They believe that the drugs were run through Nogales and Tucson before being distibuted to other states via Maricopa County.

In all six people have been taken into custody, all relatives of Domingo Ruiz. One of the arrested relatives, the son of Domingo named Noe Ruiz, is a Department of Corrections officer at the Lewis Prison Complex in Buckeye, Arizona.

Keep catching the illegal alien's ruining our society! Thank you Sheriff Joe.

DHS to discuss Arizona border plans

Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection officials are set to discuss their plans for border infrastructure in southern Arizona at an open house Tuesday in Sierra Vista.

They're expected to talk about vehicle and pedestrian fencing, access roads and patrol roads along the Mexican border in the Border Patrol's Tucson sector, which includes Cochise County.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff drew strong criticism from environmentalists last year for ordering road and fencing construction within the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area.

He waived a number of environmental laws to allow fence construction to proceed under authority that Congress gave him.

CBP says it will build in an environmentally positive way.

Arpaio calls out Napolitano for crackdown on felons

Gov. Janet Napolitano is devoting $1.6 million to clean up 60,000 outstanding felony warrants in the state - an order that seems to have upset Maricopa County Sherriff Joe Arpaio.

Arpaio said Napolitano's order diverts money from Maricopa County, which he uses to crack down on illegal immigrants.

"I still have a gun and badge, I'm still the sheriff and I'm going to make the policy how my policy is," Arpaio said. "And, Mesa - you're next."

Arpaio, who met with Napolitano for lunch last week, claimed she is part of a conspiracy to stop him from enforcing immigration laws. Arpaio accused the governor of joining Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon and Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox in a conspiracy against him.

"I got news for the governor, I've got news for the mayor, I've got news for Mary Rose Wilcox - money or no money, I guarantee you, we will fight this illegal immigration problem and Mesa, Arizona is our next stop," Arpaio said.

Under the governor's directive, the Arizona Department of Public Safety would oversee a multi-agency task force to hunt down felons.

"Our office has been asked to and will look into the legality of the governor's actions," Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said. "There were agreements signed and agreements now are not being honored so we will be looking into that issue."

We can't wait to get these wannabe public reps like the Gov.
Janet Napolitano and Phil Gordon out of office!

Another AZ drop house in W. Phoenix nets 40+ arrests

On Tuesday, May 13, 2008, Detectives from the Illegal Immigration Prevention & Apprehension CO-op Team (IIMPACT) conducted an investigation into a large number of people believed to be undocumented aliens being held against their will at a west side residence.

At approximately 11:30 AM today, Phoenix Police Department Officers were on patrol in the 6400 block of West Virginia when they noticed unusual activity at a residence located at 6420 West Virginia. They noticed several people quickly going in the residence in an unusual format and decided to conduct a welfare check at that residence. Two male subjects ran from the property as the Officers approached. The Officers uncovered that there were a total of 50 people found in the residence. All of the males were found stripped down to their underwear and held in fortified rooms to prevent their escape. The females were found in a separate fortified room.

Phoenix PD requested the assistance of the IIMPACT Unit to conduct an investigation. IIMPACT Unit Detectives arrived on scene and during their investigation they uncovered that 42 of the 50 people were being held against their will. Eight of the 50 were identified as the suspects who were controlling the others. Out of the 42 individuals being held, one individual had been physically assaulted by the suspects to the point that required transport to an area hospital. In addition, three were adult females and three juveniles. As listed earlier, the males were stripped down to their underwear, which is done regularly by the suspects to keep them from escaping. Also, the physical abuse and threats of violence are some of the forms of intimidation and control that are used by the “coyotes.”

Interviews with those being held revealed that most of them believed they had been in the house for at least two days or maybe a week. Many also stated they had not been fed in over a week. There was very little food found in the residence and definitely not an amount to feed over 40 people. It is believed that the individuals in this group were destined for Los Angeles, New York, North Carolina, Virginia and other areas in the U.S.

The suspects are currently being interviewed and once the interview process is completed and they are booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail, their names will be provided in a follow-up E-mail. The pending charges they will face will be; Extortion, Kidnapping, Human Smuggling and Aggravated Assault.

The 42 individuals believed to be undocumented aliens were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel.

Mayor of Guadalupe pulled over and cited by MCSO deputy

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office tells 3TV that it pulled over and cited the Mayor of Guadalupe, Rebecca Jimenez, Tuesday night. An MCSO deputy gave 3 citations to the Mayor - driving without a headlight, no proof of insurance, and no proof of registration.

Mayor Jimenez and Sheriff Joe Arpaio have been on opposite ends of the Sheriff's crime sweeps. The Mayor has told the Sheriff's Department that it does not want the MCSO performing the so-called crime sweeps in Guadalupe because of possible racial profiling. The Sheriff has responded by terminating the contract between Guadalupe and the Sheriff's Officeor law enforcement patrols.

DPS seizes 4,100 pounds of marijuana after traffic stop

Officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau (CVEB) conducted a traffic stop on a commercial vehicle at 11:55 PM, on Interstate 17 northbound, just north of Anthem. The vehicle was stopped because the trailer unit did not have a license plate displayed properly on the rear.

Department of Public Safety

DPS seized 4,100 pounds of marijuana and a commercial vehicle after a traffic stop.

During the initial interview of the driver, he displayed several behaviors that were indicative of possible criminal activity. The driver consented to a search of the vehicle. A DPS K-9 unit was requested to assist in the search of the vehicle. The trailer was a refrigerated box type, loaded with 20 pallets of boxes containing styrofoam plates. The boxes were stacked to the roof of the trailer. The K-9 unit was able to get near the front of the trailer were it alerted on the front area where five pallets containing 184 bundles of marijuana wrapped in cellophane was found.

The investigation uncovered that the commercial vehicle originated out of Tucson, Arizona with a destination of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for both the consumer products and the illicit load. Each bundle of marijuana was estimated to weigh approximately 20-25 pounds each. If the marijuana load it been distributed and sold per pound in Arizona, the total estimated street value would be approximately $2,500,000. The estimated street value drastically changes because of the East Coast market or Philadelphia area which would place the estimated street value at its intended destination to be approximately $6,000,000. So this is a huge marijuana seizure by DPS CVEB Officers, which greatly disrupted the U.S. drug market.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was identified as Denzil O. McFarlane, age 41, resident of Lakeland, Florida. There were no other occupants in the vehicle. The commercial vehicle was identified as a white 2003 Volvo Conventional Tractor with a Wabash Refrigerated Box Trailer. The commercial vehicle has an estimated value of over $150,000 and is owned by the driver operating under the company name of DOM Transport.

Denzil O. McFarlane was placed under arrest and booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail. He was charged with Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana for Sale and Transportation of Marijuana for Sale. The commercial vehicle was also seized along with the marijuana load.

Guadalupe residents to decide who will police their streets

Residents in Guadalupe have a tough decision ahead of them and it must be made within 180 days.

There seem to be more questions than answers as the town met to discuss who will police their streets.

This comes after the mayor got into a dispute with Sheriff Joe Arpaio over his crime suppression operations in the area. At this time there appears to be no clear-cut solution. The mayor of Guadalupe tells 3TV she wants a police department that is respectful of all human beings, regardless of citizenship. She also says she wants law enforcement that treats people with dignity.

Many residents say they do not care who patrols the streets, as long as they are protected and kept safe. Community members will gather to talk about law enforcement options because crime is a big problem in Guadalupe and one that residents want solved.

This is hilarious! I love it! The people of Guadalupe need to wake up and figure out that you can't break the law or ask the police to look the other way when your a known town that harbors illegals! Have fun trying to find anyone that wants to patrol your area now.

Bashas' lays off 100 administrative staff

The Bashas' grocery store chain has laid off about 100 workers at its administrative offices, citing rising costs, a slowing economy and the need to streamline operations.

The layoffs announced Friday amount to less than one percent of the company's workforce of more than 13,000. Affected workers will receive a severance package and have been put on a preferential hiring list for open positions.

President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Proulx says local businesses are facing a challenging time and Bashas' is no different.

Privately owned Bashas' operates more than 160 stores across Arizona and is the eighth-largest employer in the state.

There's no recession is there George! Come on!

Did internet photos of ASU Cheerleaders prompt cuts?

For football fans, there's nothing like a Saturday night in Sun Devil Stadium. But next year, one ASU tradition will be on the bench - the cheerleading squad.

ASU Students Katelyn Jones and Heather Piper have been ASU cheerleaders for 3 years. But two days ago they found out there will be no cheerleading squad for their senior year. The announcement came days after 2-year old pictures surfaced on the internet.

"I mean you can go in a bathing suit and wear the same exact thing going to a pool party. That's not going to be looked at any differently. I mean everything's covered up. We're not nude." Heather said of the photos.

Heather and 5 other cheerleaders were going to a lingerie party and posed for the pictures before at a private "cheer-only" party. But ASU atheletic officials say they are simply combining the cheer and dance squads to enhance the fan experience. Something that's been in the works for a while.

"It's a pure coincidence and the pictures had nothing to do with the decision." says Steve Hank of the ASU Athletic Department.

Meantime, it's a painful decision for some, and publishing the pictures just added insult to injury.

"You go out on Halloween, you see girls half naked all the time. It's just because we are cheerleaders, that's the reason it's put into the limelight." Heather explained.

"I've lost sleep over this. I just cannot believe it. I am still in shock." Cheerleader Katelyn Jones said.

Inmate beaten to death in Fourth Ave. Jail

The following is a press release by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office:

Thursday night an inmate housed in the Fourth Avenue Jail was beaten to death by another inmate. This marks the first inmate assault resulting in death in the near five years since the Fourth Avenue Jail was opened.

At approximately 8PM, the victim, Robert Leroy Cotton (8-3-79) went against jailhouse regulations when he entered another inmate’s cell. That cell housed the suspect, Pete Van Winkle (4-9-82). Chief of the Custody Bureau, Jerry Sheridan, says that moments after his officers performed their security walk on housing unit 4-A and for unknown reasons at this time, Van Winkle followed Cotton into the cell and out of view of tower security, assaulted Cotton.

So far our investigation shows that a video camera caught portions of the assault. The cell view was not on any of the six monitors inside the tower at the time of assault because nothing out of the ordinary appeared to be happening in or around that cell. Also no other inmates, even an inmate who walked by the assault three different times, made an attempt to contact detention officers. The assault was out of sight and sound of the security tower.

When Van Winkle then dragged Cotton out of the cell and attempted to throw him over the second floor railing, detention officers rushed to the scene. Upon arriving, the victim appeared lifeless and officers immediately performed CPR. The suspect, Van Winkle, gave himself up without resistance. He has been rebooked on first degree murder charges. A homicide investigation is currently underway.

Victim Cotton, a day labor carpenter, has a lengthy criminal record and was booked into jail by Mesa PD over one year ago. He did serve time in the state prison in 2002 and 2004. Suspect Van Winkle was just out of prison when he was arrested by Phoenix PD on February 29, 2008 for attempted second degree murder charge and misconduct involving weapons.

According to his booking information, Van Winkle has ties to the Aryan Brotherhood and had a number of assaults on staff and inmates while incarcerated with the DOC.

Sheriff Arpaio this morning went to the crime scene and personally spoke with staff about the incident. “Jails house violent criminals. I am sorry this occurred and my condolences go to the victim’s family and friends. They can be assured we will do everything we can in our investigation to secure a death penalty conviction against Van Winkle. This man deserves it.”

11 Year Old Raped, Pregnant by Illegal Immigrant

Enrique Jacobo-Valdez, 18, was arrested after raping an 11-year-old outside Buckeye.

An 18-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico was arrested by Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies for raping an 11-year-old outside Buckeye.

Enrique Jacobo-Valdez had a warrant out for his arrest in Pinal County for dangerous drug possession.

The victim's grandmother notified authorities after finding the girl locked inside a bedroom early in the morning. The girl was taken to a local hospital where it was found that she is around six weeks pregnant.

During interrogation, Valdez admitted he knew the girl was only 11.

“Because of our strict policies to investigate and arrest illegal aliens, we determined Valdez is here in this country illegally,” said Sheriff Joe Arpaio. “If the criminal justice system in Pinal County had done what we do, the suspect might have been deported or held in jail and that little girl would have be spared this fate.”

Recall Effort Underway for Phoenix Mayor

Activists claim he isn't doing what needs to be done to discourage and arrest illegal immigrants.

A group that includes members of organizations involved in recent anti-illegal immigrant protests is trying to recall Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon. American Citizens United filed paperwork Wednesday to create a political action committee and said Gordon should be recalled for policies that are too soft on illegal immigrants.

Spokeswoman Anna Gaines said she and her supporters are angry that Phoenix police do not have unconditional authority to call Immigrations and Customs Enforcement when they encounter a suspected illegal immigrant. "The main issue is that he has been dividing the community and he has not supported the enforcement of immigration laws,'' Gaines said of Gordon.

"A few on the very fringe want to promote their extremist agenda for Phoenix,'' Gordon said in a statement. "That agenda was overwhelmingly rejected just eight months ago and it will be rejected again.''

To recall Gordon, who was re-elected in September with 77% of the vote, the activists must gather 23,751 valid signatures in 120 days from the time they file their formal campaign paperwork.

Group members said they sought only to remove Gordon from office and had no preference on who should replace him if they are successful.

Wildfire Near Grand Canyon Almost Contained

About 165 firefighters are battling the fire, which is a mile from the southern boundary of Grand Canyon National Park.

Fire crews will be working to put out hot

spots today in a blaze that covers more than three square miles on

the edge of Grand Canyon National Park.

The X fire is about 60 percent contained and winds are predicted

to be calmer today. The U.S. Forest Service was concerned that the

fire would be fanned by gusts. But a spokeswoman says the winds

yesterday weren't as bad as had been feared.

The blaze was spotted just after noon Tuesday and grew rapidly.

Authorities believe the X fire was human-caused, and an

investigation continues.

Light Rail Track is Finished

Officials say project is still on schedule, on budget.

The Phoenix area's light rail project has reached a milestone all of the rail has now been laid. METRO Light Rail CEO Rick Simonetta said at a news conference to mark the event that we should now see orange barricades coming down at an even faster rate, and begin to see light-rail vehicles on test runs. He said the 20-mile initial segment, from uptown Phoenix to Mesa, is the longest light-rail initial segment in U.S. history.

Simonetta says public education will begin soon, teaching drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians how to behave around the trains. He said that education will include a component in elementary and high schools, since many school kids will use the trains and/or cross their paths on their way to and from school.

Simonetta adds that the 31 gaps in the rails, discovered during routine inspections a few months ago, have been repaired. Most of the cost was picked up by the contractor and other associated with the project, not by taxpayers. But he said the cost of repairs around $600,000 was much less than it could have been, and is well within the contingency fund.

The light rail system is scheduled to begin service on Dec. 27.

12 Smugglers Busted in Arpaio Raid

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies arrested 21 illegals, 12 of them human smugglers, at two west Phoenix homes. Here are pictures of AK-47's, rifles, drugs, cash, and ammunition.

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon issued a statement, saying he's glad the sheriff is redirecting his efforts in rounding up coyotes who are smuggling and torturing instead of going after dishwashers and brown-skinned Americans. Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he goes after everyone who breaks the law and asks the Mayor to authorize his police officers to do the same.
